Hours/Contract: Mon – Fri 0800 hrs – 1600 hrs (On-call and overtime as required)
Location: One position will be based in Shotton, Co. Durham and a second position will be based in North Shields, Tyne and Wear. Both locations cover operational activity within the region and wider UK as required.

The North East Regional Organised Crime Unit is one of ten Regional Organised Crime Units (“ROCU”) in England and Wales who lead the regional response to tackling serious and organised crime whilst supporting local and national delivery. The ROCU network continues to expand and Home Office funding through police officer uplift and increased police staff capacity presents exciting opportunities to further enhance service delivery and positively impact on our partners and the public.
The Home Office Serious and Organised Crime Strategy defines ROCU as leading the regional fight against Serious and Organised Crime and NEROCU have a critical role in leading, connecting and co-ordinating delivery across our region in all four P’s of the strategy; Pursue – prosecuting and disrupting people engaged in serious and organised criminality. Prevent – preventing people from engaging in serious and organised criminality. Protect – increasing protection against organised crime. Prepare – reducing the impact of serious and organised crime where it takes place.
NEROCU comprises of specialist teams delivering across intelligence, operations, investigations, cyber, economic, technical and digital capabilities.

The role
A rare opportunity has arisen for two positions within the Technical Surveillance Unit as a Technical surveillance officer working with a team of specialist staff operating within the North-East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU). You will join Northumbria Police and work within the Regional Technical Surveillance Unit.

As a TSU officer, you will provide critical support and technical assistance in covert surveillance operations, collaborating with regional police forces and national law enforcement agencies to combat Serious and Organised Crime.
What you’ll do
- Customer Liaison & Feasibility Studies: Identify and prioritise requirements, ensuring authorizations. Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments, presenting options to agree on the best solution.
- Solution Design & Implementation: Develop bespoke technical solutions, liaising with internal and external parties. Implement and install solutions, adapting to changes to maintain operation integrity and safety.
- Team Collaboration & Flexibility: Work cooperatively with team members, contributing to team achievements and department goals whilst aligning with Police Service values.
- Database & Equipment Management: Maintain detailed records for management and audit purposes. Service and repair equipment, monitor stock levels, and ensure compliance with quality standards.
- Guidance: Provide guidance on equipment, ensuring issue is authorised and adheres to department and national procedures.

As a TSU officer, you’ll need to bring a forward-looking and creative approach to your duties, ensuring you’re always one step ahead in this dynamic field.
Essential:
- Qualifications: HND/City and Guilds (QCF Level 5 or above) in Audio Visual technologies/engineering, broadcast or network engineering OR closely related technical or engineering disciplines.
- Teamwork: Collaborate within a small specialist team, working independently and efficiently together.
- Operational: Work in accordance with the aims and objectives set by the organisation in accordance with the National Decision Model and THRIVE.
- Research and Project Work: You will be able to undertake research and project work to provide technical solutions or make recommendations to resolve issues, ensuring best value within Force budgets and presenting findings in an appropriate format to inform decision making.
- Continuous Professional Development: You’ll maintain professional license status and develop technical knowledge through liaison with external agencies/partners, attending meetings, courses and completing qualifications, as required, in order to keep up to date with changes.
- Driving License and Flexibility: Possess a full UK/European driving licence and be willing to work unsociable hours and travel across the UK at short notice.
Desirable:
- Experience: A background in AV systems; electronics, engineering, IP networks, together with established competency in MS suite, databases and record keeping management software.
- Training: Health and Safety (IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent) or formal training experience.
