Director of Projects and Programmes

NATS is the UK’s leading air navigation service provider, handling over 2 million flights each year. We provide air traffic control services from two control centres supporting airports all around the UK, as well as a wide range of commercial solutions to over 30 countries internationally. This role will provide strategic vision and leadership in the delivery of projects and programmes, in a safety critical, regulated environment.

The role is accountable for the successful delivery of all programmes within the NATS Long Term Investment Plan and the associated delivery capability at a strategic level.

Creating a successful delivery culture with a commercial mindset and providing leadership and direction across the project and programme delivery teams.

The scale of the projects and programmes within the strategic portfolio is c£650million, with an average yearly spend of c£100million.

ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accountable for setting the overall vision and strategy for the Projects & Programmes Directorate.
  • Leading, monitoring and governing the Projects & Programmes Division to ensure successful project & programme delivery.
  • Ensuring Programmes Structures are in line with best practice, regulatory requirements and legal and/or contractual obligations.
  • Accountable for engagement and influence of Portfolio Approval Review Board, NATS Executive and Transformation Review Committee.
  • Accountable for the Business Plan, ensuring the Projects & Programmes Division successfully delivers on all targeted goals (budget, schedule and resource)
  • Create a culture of drive, innovation and challenge to ensure that all Programmes and Projects deliveries are optimised to deliver outcomes.
  • Create the conditions that deliver a highly competent, energetic, engaged and motivated workforce who are committed and aligned to delivery outcomes.  

QUALIFICATIONS, PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • BA / BSc / BEng Hons in relevant discipline (e.g. Engineering, Project Management) or significant relevant experience in lieu of a formal qualification (MA/MSC desirable)
  • PMP / PRINCE2 / APM / MSP is desirable
  • Full membership of a chartered institute of Project Management or equivalent or actively working towards
  • Experience of building a delivery culture in an operationally constrained environment
  • Experience of delivering large programmes in a safety critical, national infrastructure environment
  • Experience of managing complex commercial arrangements and contracts with multiple suppliers in an integrated programme
  • An advanced level of Programme Management knowledge and experience, a recognised expert / advisor to others in conflict management, governance, resource management and stakeholder management
