Director of Technical Strategy

NATS is the UK’s leading air navigation service provider, handling over 2 million flights each year. We provide air traffic control services from two control centres supporting airports all around the UK, as well as a wide range of commercial solutions to over 30 countries internationally. The Director of Technical Strategy will provide strategic vision and leadership for all technical strategy activities, including our technical roadmap and governance, in a safety critical, regulated environment.

They will shape the roadmap for change across our technical domains to meet the evolving needs of the operation and our customers, ensuring a relentless focus on a safe, secure and resilient service.

This role will also be accountable the Research & Development (R&D) and Simulation functions.

ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accountable for setting the overall vision and strategy and governance for the Technical Strategy
  • Accountable for definition, evolution, and delivery of our ATM Roadmap, informing and guiding our portfolio and investment plans, and creating an internal and external change agenda
  • Leading the R&D function, driving innovation by fostering a culture of creativity and experimentation, exploring new concepts, the application of new technology
  • Accountable for the day-to-day operational delivery and performance of the Simulations function. Ensuring the evolution and development of the Simulation, Emulation to support the demands of the ATM Roadmap
  • Accountable for technical horizon scanning and engagement across industry and beyond, to influence, and maintain awareness of, potential impacts, or technical opportunities of benefit
  • Collaborating in R&D innovation with wider industry & academia including the raising of collaborative finance
  • Accountable for business value & efficiency, overall performance and resilience, sustainment and obsolescence management, finance and risk management of the Technical Domains

QUALIFICATIONS, PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • BA / BSc / BEng Hons in relevant discipline (e.g. Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science) or significant relevant experience in lieu of a formal qualification (MA/MSc desirable)
  • Chartered Engineer Status is essential & Fellow status is highly desirable
  • Experience of building a delivery culture in an operationally constrained environment
  • Significant experience of leading the delivery of operational engineering services underpinned by the service management model and principles
  • Sophisticated understanding of the levers that underpin service redesign and business/service transformation
  • Extensive track record of leading and delivering a significant portfolio of change within all constraints, able to take ‘tough’ decisions and see the required action through
  • Demonstrable capability in applying the principles and development a culture of service management
