Job Purpose:
We are seeking a Systems Engineer to join our Flight Data Service Support Team at our control centre in Swanwick, an environment in which safety is paramount. You will be working within a wider team of engineers that look after multiple flight data systems and your experience of working on Unix/Linux based operating systems and related hardware within a real-time safety or mission critical environment will be advantageous
Duties include:
- Responsible for providing specialist level support for flight data systems on a day-to-day basis for engineering fault diagnosis and rectification to restore service and redundancy
- Provide technical input to the change process for planning and implementation where upgrades, expansions or functional changes are required to enable the system to meet the service levels, while providing the agreed levels of safety
- Providing support to project teams to ensure that work placed on service support is delivered to agreed timescales and new systems meet the required transition acceptance criteria while safeguarding existing operational services during transition activity
- Participate in and control the service support maintenance staff in carrying out planned and corrective maintenance to ensure that all systems/equipment meet specified standards and performance
- Produce and validate operational/maintenance procedures and review updated system documentation
- Assist in the investigation of incidents as required. Raise problem reports and change requests when appropriate and assume ownership throughout their lifecycle
- Contribute technical input to incident reports and implement approved improvements
Essential skills and experience:
- Qualified to at least HNC level in an engineering or information technology discipline
- Proven experience of working in an operational environment and you should have an appreciation of air traffic control services
- Knowledge and experience of Linux/Unix/AIX and networking
- Strong understanding of computer technology and hardware
- Ability to technically supervise others
- Proven ability to communicate in a clear and precise manner (both written and oral)
- The job holder is required to be flexible and adaptive in an environment of continuous technology platform changes
Additional vacancy information:
You will complete a comprehensive training programme to gain the necessary system specific knowledge. Once trained, you will be a member of an on-call roster as part of the 24-hour support to the operation. There may be the need to provide telephone support or attend out of hours for service restoration, and you must be able to attend Swanwick within 1 hour of the call. Additionally, you will be required to attend out of hours to deploy planned service changes
