Job Purpose
The Software Engineering Practice is responsible for supporting the development of a range of NATS software systems and applications which are used for training, prototyping change, developing and testing of air traffic management tools and concepts

NATS is recruiting for a Software Engineer to be part of this Software Engineering Practice to provide a systematic engineering approach to software development applying the principles of software engineering to analyse, design, develop and maintain software systems

Other Duties
Software Engineers are required to work in a dynamic and flexible environment, key tasks include the following

  • Analysis, design and implementation of changes to software components, in accordance with customer requirements
  • Design and build software platforms
  • 2nd line support requiring a responsive and flexible approach to ensure a high utilisation of these systems
  • Contribute to proposals by assisting with activities such as requirements capture, risk analysis, prototyping, and the production of written proposals
  • Production and maintenance of documentation covering the full development lifecycle
  • Provision of expertise and knowledge in the rapidly changing field of commercial software and systems
  • Ensure that the processes and tools used in the development of software systems are efficient and effective

Essential Skills & Experience

  • As a minimum, a HNC (or equivalent level 4 or SCQF level 7 qualification) in a computing, engineering, technology or numerate related discipline or an equivalent defined by a professional body
  • Should be motivated and able to work with the minimum of supervision as part of a team where close co-operation and interaction are essential
  • To have good communication skills, both verbal and written, to efficiently carry out the job where dialogue with customers is of paramount importance
  • A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a good knowledge or experience of some or all of the following technologies and techniques:
  • Object Oriented Coding: C++
  • User interface design: QT
  • Scripting languages: Python, PERL,
  • Working with CM Tools (eg: Subversion) within a large code-base
  • Interactive and post-mortem debugging
  • Development in a Linux environment
  • Development in a Windows Environment
  • It would be desirable to have experience of Javascript/Typescript Development
