As the Behavioural Safety Lead, you will  be the centre point for all Behavioural Safety support, enquiries and facilitate the change to a set of expected behaviours to deliver the MCA’s safety culture.

Your role will be to work with the Directorate Management within the MCA to support the delivery and development of behavioural safety training to support making the MCA a safer place to work for all staff and volunteers through behavioural change.

The role is also intended to support the MCA in its efforts to remain compliant with all forms of Health and Safety regulations and requirements within the UK and provide support to those working for the MCA overseas.

The Behavioural Safety Lead reports to the Assistant Director – Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability within the Directorate of People, Safety and Communications working in parallel with the Operational Safety Lead. This role also works closely with all Directorates to oversee and assure the MCA of a consistent and cohesive approach to the behavioural aspect of changing safety culture within the context of the MCA Way.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the oversight of all aspects of Behavioural Safety within the MCA
  • Working with the relevant Directorate Directors of MCA to improve workplace Behavioural Safety for all employees and volunteers
  • Become a recognised Subject Matter Expert for the MCA regarding Behavioural Safety
  • Ensure the Maritime and Coastguard Agency are advised of future regulatory changes
  • Implement practical measures which enhance the MCA’s behavioural response to Health and Safety to further embed a safety culture throughout the organisation

You are a confident and resilient individual who can effectively communicate with people at all levels, adapting their approach to suit tactical or strategic discussions as needed. You are a strong leader, taking charge of behavioural safety within the organisation. You have excellent relationship building skills, working with a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver objectives. You are a true team player who collaborates effectively to drive success.

You will have experience of working in safety critical and behaviourally complex organisation such as the shipping industry, rail, complex manufacturing. Your experience will come with working in a high risk/ hazard environment.

You show enthusiasm for the subject matter and the ability to articulate the programme clearly. You have a keen eye for the bigger picture and excel at conveying key messages.
